What Really Sets You from Fool
What comes to courage when we hear the word race? Surely one would agree that we intend of the racial categories. But receive we ever realized that when asked that judicial, the response usually begins with black color then white. As if forming a ~ing between the two immediately. Janet E. Helms defines racial identity at the same time that “a person’s quality or habit of identifying with a racial arrange……..” (Helms2). In her article White Attitudes and Racial Harmony, Helms discusses me statuses that she refers to taken in the character of a white racial identity model. Though Helms portion on the ego statuses were based up~ the body her observations of white people, Paul Beatty in his piece, “What Set You from Fool” goes from one side some of the stages. Of the six she mentioned, Beatty underwent Contact, Reintegration and Pseudo Independence. The pristine to be discussed is Contact.
Helms set forth Contact as the stage of innocence and naivet; when a person is not level aware that there are racial and socio national issues that he or she should be attentive to. When Beatty first entered the seminary in “black” Los Angeles, he recalled that he didn’t know a negro was only that he shouldn’t be one. He also said “The simply thing remotely black about me then were my skin color and revealed of control afro…………I knew I was dingy; I just didn’t behave ebon”(Beatty 3). Here Beatty is insensible that race means something more than the pigment of skin and struggles to suppose to mean the implications of his blackness. What are these implications? These are to a greater degree than likely, having to deal by racism and discrimination on a diurnal basis. According to Helm “Whenever says we’re going to reason about race relations everyone turns to take heed for the nearest black guy considered in the state of though he or she automatically controls drive swiftly in the country”. Mind you, this has been the protect for over centuries but still productions a prevailing issue.
