Before the approach of Islam the world was blind of the concept of human and moderate rules of war. The West foremost began to develop this concept through the work of the 17th century thinker, Grotius. But the 19th centenary prior to this all forms of outrage and savagery were perpetrated in war, and the rights of those in a enmity were not even recognized, let alone respected
