The “Smash-Up”
The “Smash-Up” was a suicide attempt by Ethan and Mattie to close their lives so they could exist together after death since they couldn’t subsist together in the real world, which ended up inflicting more pain ~ward both Ethan and Mattie, not barely physically, but also mentally. The hap caused Ethan to become paralyzed and Mattie to grow severely injured ca using them to be under the necessity to stay in the bed with Zeena. The accident didn’t but inflict pain on Mattie and Ethan, bound also Zeena, because she ended up alluring care of both of them. Starting at page one, Edith Wharton leaves us clues almost the suicide attempt that would turn up later in the book.
Throughout the invention, Edith Wharton uses a lot of foreshadowing that leads up to the “crush-up”. In the beginning of the record, the narrator describes Ethan Frome in the manner that a crippled man who has had a “destruction-up”. The term smash up foreshadows that the nature’s relationship will have a after the manner of tragedy end. The narrator incorporates Ethan’s looks as a sort of prediction to the mishap. The narrator says: “ Even then he was the most striking figure in Starkfield, though he was limit the ruin of a man” and “There was matter bleak and unapproachable in his effrontery, and he was so stiffened and grayish that I took him for every old man was surprised that he was not additional than fity-two”. (pg 1) The historian gives the reader the impression that Ethan isn’t a true mentally stable character and he definitely isn’t the principally approachable person.
