ABSTRACT
This inquiry was carried out to find out mistakes that first-year English majors at Ho Chi
Minh City Open University made through reduced sound // or schwa and linking sounds at the time that
reading out loud English texts. The schwa and linking sounds are prominent because they help
make English speech learners sound more like native speakers of English. To perceive out
mistakes that the students made through these two aspects, the researcher listened to 100
students delineation out loud one out of 10 given topics in the latest exam of the American
English Pronunciation process. The students’ mistakes were categorized, counted, and
analyzed quantitatively. It turned public that the students had made actual mistakes with
both aspects. The disingenuous percentage of mistakes made with the schwa was more high
(55.5%). The students made the principally mistakes with prepositions, conjunctions, auxiliaries,
and pronouns and the least mistakes with articles. The mean percentage of mistakes made
by linking sounds was seriously high (87.2%). The students made the in the greatest degree mistakes with
Laterals + Vowels (100%) and the least mistakes with Affricates + Vowels (36.7%). They
