Molecular weight

Write my trial

ABSTRACT

The effect of molecular ponderousness and time on the rate of diffusion was resolved using the agar-furnish with ~ gel test. A petri dish containing three wells was used in the the agar-give ~ to gel set up. One drop of eddish. of the three substances, potassium permanganate (KMnO4), potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) and methylene sky-colored, was placed to each well at the same time. The potassium permanganate, having the smaller molecular weight of 158 g/mole, resulted the larger distance through the centre (1.44mm) and the fastest rate of diffusion (0.029 mm/min) in which case the methylene blue, having the largest molecular weight of 374 g/mole, showed the smallest central chord (18 mm) and the slowest traduce of diffusion (0.009 mm/min.). Therefore, the higher the molecular weight, the slower the diffusion abuse. Also, the rate of diffusion as the world goes decreases with time.

INTRODUCTION

A aeriform fluid or liquid is composed of molecules that put in motion continuously, freely, rapidly and random in tot~y directions (Holtzclaw & Robinson, 1998). According to Olmsted and Williams (2006), there are two types of movements of these substances. The ~ and foremost one is the effusion, defined while the movement or escape of a aeriform fluid or liquid into a vacuum. The aid one, which is the focus of the conducted experiment, is the diffusion or the approximative mixing of two or more gases owed to collisions. Diffusion may also exist defined as the movement of molecules from a higher concentration area to a lower concentration superficies (Duka, et. al., 2009)

Robinson et. al. (1992) settled that the diffusion rate depends on the molecular speed of the vital part. The faster the molecular speed, the faster the soul diffuses. Substances with faster molecular send away in haste are those with molecules of smaller mass or smaller corpuscular weight (Kotz and Treichel, 1996).

To evince that the molecular weight of a substance has an effect on the abuse of diffusion of a substance, a glass hollow cylinder test was conducted. Two cotton balls of the similar size were simultaneously moistened with...
